Abstract
In the 1960's vapors of metals
were examined for low-lying energy-level structures to provide
efficient laser action. Lead and manganese were earlier, but
copper has a more ideal energy-level configuration that yields
high-power green and yellow pulsed lasers. Copper lasers have
demonstrated high gain, scalability to large diameters and a
high-brightness output using unstable or high-loss optical
resonators.
